Baseball sweeps doubleheader at San Diego Christian

Renteria, Jemmett, and Mecucci homer as Cougars take games 12-2 and 6-2

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
The Cal State San Marcos Baseball team swept San Diego Christian in their first road contests of the season, winning 12-2 in the first game, and 6-2 in the second. The Cougars received excellent starting pitching once again, and 3 different Cougars homered to boost the offense.

Game 1 (CSUSM 12 – San Diego Christian 2)

Box Score

James Dykstra pitched superbly once again for San Marcos, going 5 innings and allowing just 1 earned run. Dykstra struck out 3, and gave up just 2 hits, allowing only 3 hits in 10 innings pitched this season. Shaun Sanford came in for the bottom of the sixth and pitched 2 hitless innings, showing signs of being a lights out reliever as he struck out 4 Hawk batters. Sanford has not allowed a hit in 5 1/3 innings in 2012. Kevin Hilton and Jackson Gaskins closed out the 8th and 9th innings with little drama.

Offensively, the Cougars jumped on Hawks starter Lucas Whitmore from the 1st inning, scoring twice in the opening frame and never looking back. CSUSM pounded out 11 hits, including doubles from Kyle Secciani and Austin Coleman, and a triple from Michael Mecucci. Anthony Renteria continued to carry a hot bat, knocking his 2nd homerun of the season over the right field wall in the 8th inning.

Game 2 (CSUSM 6 – San Diego Christian 2) *7 innings*

Box Score

Darren Gay earned his first start of the season and did not disappoint, pitching 5 scoreless innings and striking out 6. Michael Mecucci homered in the 2nd inning to give CSUSM a 1-0 lead early, and Anthony Renteria's RBI double to left center brought Trent Jemmett home in the 3rd to extend the lead to two

It would stay close until the 5th inning when shortstop Trent Jemmett knocked in the third Cougar home run of the day, a 3-run shot to left field. The Cougars would add another in the inning to make the score 6-0. Steven Schafer issued a couple of walks that led to runs in the bottom of the 6th, but Andrew Larson closed the door for CSUSM with 2 solid innings.

With the victories, CSUSM's record now stands at 4-1. The Cougars play San Diego Christian again tomorrow in another double header starting at 11:00 AM.
