Box Score OCEANSIDE, Calif. – Danny Redmon scored a career-high 24 points as the Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team rallied from a 10-point deficit in the second half to overtake Point Loma Nazarene 51-46 on Wednesday night at MiraCosta College.
CSUSM (8-3) trailed 30-20 three minutes into the second half, but Redmon scored 12 points in a 14-3 run over the next 4:25 to hand the Cougars the lead for good, 34-33, with 12:39 remaining. He went 11-of-16 from the field and was the only Cougar besides
Adam Eakles (2-of-3) to tally more than one field goal in the contest.
Judd Welfringer's free throw brought PLNU within three, 42-39, but
Jose Rivera answered with a three out of a timeout to hand CSUSM a six-point lead with 2:24 left. CSUSM made 7-of-9 free throws down the stretch to ward off PLNU.
“We were a little bit lackluster tonight and we didn't play with a lot of energy in the first half. Point Loma is a physical team and we had a hard time scoring,” said CSUSM head coach
Jim Saia. “
Danny Redmon basically took the game over, and we needed someone to at that point. From there it became a possession by possession game. We just ended up making more plays than they did.”
AJ Ussery led the Sea Lions with 11 points while Todd Campbell added eight and a game-high eight rebounds. Despite being outrebounded 42-26, CSUSM held PLNU (2-5) to 29.6 percent (16-of-54) shooting on the night.
It was the second game in as many nights for the Cougars. CSUSM fell in an exhibition at UCLA, 83-60, on Tuesday night at Pauley Pavilion.
The road doesn't get any easier for the Cougars, as defending national champion Concordia (Calif.) comes to town Saturday night. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
Saturday night's CSUSM-Concordia contest is San Marcos Youth Basketball Night. Any youth player wearing his or her jersey to the game will receive free admission.
