Box Score LOS ANGELES – Quincy Lawson registered 14 points and
Ali Langford added 10 in the Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team's 83-60 loss to UCLA in an exhibition on Tuesday night at Pauley Pavilion.
UCLA led by 12 at halftime and opened the second frame with a 10-3 spurt to build a 19-point hole that the Cougars could not climb out of.
CSUSM was outshot 51.7% - 37.9% from the field by the Bruins, and outscored by 18 inside the paint.
"Our team did well in spots, but we couldn't keep up physically with UCLA. There were a couple of moments there where we challenged them, but we didn't make free throws and we didn't shoot the ball well," said CSUSM head coach
Jim Saia.
Saia previously spent seven seasons at UCLA as an assistant coach from 1996-2003.
Shabazz Muhammad led all scorers with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting, while Norman Powell added 14 for the Bruins. Kyle Anderson registered 16 boards in the win.
The Bruins jumped out to a 7-2 lead on Muhammad's three-point play and a pair of dunks by Travis Wear and Jordan Adams.
Down nine, Cougar guard
Hakeem Washington hit a three and Langford hit a turn-around in the lane to make it 16-11.
CSUSM rallied out of the first media timeout with an 11-2 run to get itself back into the game.
Adam Eakles drew a foul and made both free throws, and Washington picked the ball off at midcourt to lead to a fast-break dunk by Lawson.
Then,
Jose Rivera hustled back to pick the pocket of Larry Drew II before being rewarded for his work with an easy layup off a feed from Ranger. UCLA was forced to call timeout leading by three, 20-17.
Lawson capped the run out of Ben Howland's timeout, stealing the ball from Tony Parker at midcourt before jamming it home to make it 20-19.
"I feel we played really hard. I think our team got better and we improved on a lot of things. Pauley Pavilion looks great. I think our team can be really successful this year," said Lawson.
However, UCLA held the Cougars scoreless over the following 4:04 to take a 10-point lead by the following media break.
A 6-0 stretch by CSUSM made it 29-25. Lawson snapped the Cougar cold streak with another dunk, Eakles hit a jumper from the right side and
Jacob Ranger swished one from the elbow to bring the Cougars within four with 5:50 left.
The Bruins finished the half with an 8-of-14 stretch to take a 42-30 lead into the break.
Down by 19 five minutes into the second half, the Cougars made a final push to get back in it. Washington created a layup off a dribble drive, Ranger drained a 3-pointer from the corner and Lawson hit a turn-around in the lane to make it 52-40 with 13:08 remaining.
However, the Bruins responded with a 13-2 run to make the lead 23 five minutes later.
Washington ended the night with nine points, while Ranger finished with eight.
CSUSM shot 4-of-18 from the 3-point range and hit just four of its 15 free throws in the second half.
"It was an excellent experience playing here in Pauley Pavilion. I really appreciate the experience and all the history here with John Wooden," said Langford.
The Cougars turn around to play Point Loma Nazarene at 7:30 p.m. at MiraCosta College tomorrow night before hosting Concordia (Calif.) on Saturday.
