CSUSM Sets Program Record with Fifth-Straight Win

Box Score OCEANSIDE, Calif. – Four Cougars finished in double figures as the Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team downed Concordia (Calif.) 78-57 on Tuesday night at MiraCosta College.

Heather Thompson led all players with of 19 points and 15 rebounds for her fourth double-double in the last five games and her second in as many nights. Sherika Miller tallied 16, Alexandria Alvarado registered 14 and Cassie Damyanovich added 13 as the Cougars set a new program record with its fifth-consecutive victory.

CSUSM (8-9) led by four at the half before using a 14-0 stretch over a 3:15 span early on in the second to open up the game. Concordia (1-7) shot just 27.3 percent from the field and was never able to get within single digits the final 15:11 of the contest.

CSUSM trailed by six early on before stringing together a 7-0 run to take its first lead of the game at the 12:37 mark, capped off by Damyanovich's long 3-pointer.

Concordia climbed back from a four-point hole to make it 26-26, but Mechel'la Logan made a pair of jumpers and Damyanovich hit a runner on the right-side over CSUSM's next three possessions to hand the Cougars a six-point advantage.

Tessa Gonzalez hit a jumper from the left elbow to put CSUSM up seven, but Katie Ogdon drained a three to pull Concordia within 35-31 at the break.

CSUSM shot 51.9% (14-of-27) from the floor in the first half while holding CUI to 30.6% (11-of-36).

The Cougars wouldn't take long to break it open in the final stanza, however. CSUSM started its 14-0 run at the 16:05 mark, making five consecutive baskets before Alvarado led a 3-on-1 for an easy layup to make it 53-35 with 13:43 remaining.

A 6-0 spurt by the Eagles brought CUI within 12 with six minutes left, but Damyanovich cut the stretch short with a hard layup from the right baseline to make it 66-52.

After CUI cut the deficit to 12 with just under two minutes remaining, Miller hit two free throws before Thompson and Alvarado made back-to-back fast break layups to put the Cougars back up by 18 and out of reach with 1:29 on the clock.
