Still Trippin'
CSUSM continues its six-game road trip to start the season this weekend against NCAA DII's CSULA and NCAA DI's USD. The Cougars began their campaign last week with an exhibition at UC Irvine before facing Fresno Pacific, William Jessup and UC Merced on consecutive days. CSUSM won two of three on their trip north, taking down WJU 67-42 before beating UCM 77-45.
Coop de Ville
Junior forward
Danielle Cooper has been on a tear during the Cougars' first three games of the season. She's averaging 17.3 points and 15.3 rebounds per game and has shot 52 percent (22-of-42) from the field. Cooper set school records with 31 points and 18 rebounds in the Cougars' season-opening loss to Fresno Pacific. Then, she pulled down 14 boards in the win over William Jessup before recording another double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds at UC Merced. She also leads the teams with six blocks.
Shutdown D
Whatever head coach Sheri Jennum said during half time of Saturday's game at William Jessup seemed to work. Down by eight heading into the break, the Cougars held the Lady Warriors to just nine points in the second half on their way to a 67-42 victory. It was the least amount of points CSUSM has ever conceded in a single half in program history, eight less than the previous low (vs. Cal State San Bernardino, 17 in the 2
nd half on Nov. 26, 2011). WJU was held to 4-of-28 (14.29 %) from the floor in the second frame, 28 percentage points lower than its first-half total (11-of-28, 42.3 %).
As the Eagle Flies
Cal State LA is the defending California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament runner-up and has been picked to finish second in the conference in a preseason poll of conference coaches. It will be the first-ever meeting between the teams and the sixth time the Cougars have played a CCAA squad during their regular season. CSUSM went 2-3 against CCAA teams in 2011-12, defeating Cal State San Bernardino 46-43 on Nov. 26, 2011 and Cal State Dominguez Hills 54-43 on Dec. 10, 2011.
Torero Time
CSUSM and USD will face-off for the second-straight year on Saturday at Jenny Craig Pavilion. The Toreros beat the Cougars 80-56 in the teams' last meeting on Nov. 11, 2011.
Justine Chacon led CSUSM with 12 points, while
Mechel'la Logan pitched in with 11. The Toreros have been tabbed to finish fourth in the West Coast Conference preseason coaches poll, behind Brigham Young (BYU), Gonzaga and St. Mary's.
