Cougars Comeback Stopped Short Against No. 7 The Master’s

Box Score
ESCONDIDO, Calif.— In their final regular season match before heading to Mayville, North Dakota for the 2012 A.I.I. Championships, the Cal State San Marcos women's volleyball team put up a tough fight against 7th ranked The Master's, eventually falling in four sets. A brilliant third set comeback looked to put the Cougars right back in the match, but it was not to be Friday evening in front of over 300 fans in attendance for Senior Night and the final home game of the season.

The Cougars got off to strong starts in each of the four sets, grabbing an early lead in each before the Mustangs would eventually work their way back. However, with their backs against the wall in the third set, trailing two sets and down 22-19, the Cougars went on a five-point tear to turn the tables and eventually win the set on a clutch block by Andi Vordermann and Kelli McLin.

CSUSM carried momentum into the fourth set by grabbing an early three-point lead, but The Master's evened the score at 10 before taking the lead and refusing to let go. In all, however, the match was closer than the score indicated, as it featured 22 tie scores and nine lead changes.

Leading the way for the Cougars were their two first team all-conference selections from last year Alyssa Foster and Taylor DeGraaf. DeGraaf led the offense with a game-high 21 kills, and racked up a double-double with 13 digs. Foster was seemingly everywhere on the court with four kills, 43 assists, and a career best 20 digs.

Brittany Thompson and Andi Vordermann each chipped in seven kills, and Kelli McLin recorded three kills and six blocks. In a match with several long rallies with multiple possession changes, six different Cougars recorded 10 or more digs.

With the loss, CSUSM drops to 24-13 on the season, while The Master's improves to 23-4. The Cougars will take on La Sierra and Mayville State in pool play in the A.I.I. Championships in North Dakota Friday, needing to finish in the top two in their pool to advance to the semifinals Saturday. The top two teams in the tournament will receive an automatic berth to the NAIA National Championships. CSUSM will defend their championship as the top seed in the tournament.
