No. 20 CSUSM Hosts Top-25 Test with No. 13 Biola in Town


SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The 20th-ranked Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team opens its home schedule against No. 13 Biola on Wednesday night.

Home at Last
The Cougars opened their season with a four-game road trip to start the season, going 2-1 in official games and 2-2 in all contests. CSUSM played San Diego State in an exhibition on Nov. 11 and were tied with the Aztecs at halftime, before eventually falling by 21. The Cougars cut an 11-point deficit to one with under a minute left against Fresno Pacific on Nov. 3, but were edged 89-86 in the team's first official game. CSUSM rebounded with a resounding 16-point victory over No. 4 Robert Morris and a 74-64 win over Rocky Mountain (Mont.) in the Tip-Off Classic hosted by Robert Morris/Concordia (Calif.)

No. 4? No Problem
The Cougars took down fourth-ranked Robert Morris (Ill.) last Friday, 91-75, behind 19 points from Bryan Emanuel and 15 from Jose Rivera, who was 4-of-6 from three-point range. The Cougars used a 7-2 run over the final 1:34 to take an eight-point lead at half time, and never let the Eagles within seven the rest of the way.

Not The First Rodeo
In just its second year of collegiate competition, the Cougars have already played five games against NAIA top-five teams. CSUSM is 3-2 in those contests, including a pair over RMC. In 2011-12, the Cougars twice beat the No. 2 team in the country; CSUSM topped Mountain State (W.Va.) 75-65 on Nov. 12, 2011 and beat RMC 90-66 on Dec. 29, 2011. Defending national champion Concordia (Calif.) topped the Cougars 92-88 when ranked No. 1, and 92-75 when CUI was No. 4.

BIO-la 101
The Biola Eagles head to t0wn undefeated so far in 2012-13 with wins over Menlo, Bethesda, La Sierra and Simpson. The Eagles are coming of a Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) title and an appearance in the NAIA National Tournament Quarterfinals. Biola topped eventual national champion Concordia (Calif.) 81-77 in the GSAC championship game. The Cougars and Eagles met once in 2011, with Biola taking a 66-56 win in La Mirada. Jacob Ranger scored 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting in the game.

GSAC Tour Continues
After their clash with the Eagles, the Cougars will head north to play Vanguard, who the Cougars last saw in their first-ever official game on Nov. 5, 2011. CSUSM downed the Lions 86-61 in front of a packed house at MiraCosta with each of the starters registering double-digit points. Vanguard is 3-1 on the season, falling only to No. 1 Concordia (Calif.). The Lions also beat RMC at the Tip-Off Classic.

We Jammin'
CSUSM basketball alumnus Jamel McGuire was selected by the Bakersfield Jam of in the eighth round of the 2012 NBA Developmental League Draft on Nov. 2. He is the first Cougar to be drafted into the NBDL, the feeder league for the NBA. The Bakersfield Jam is an NBA affiliate of the Atlanta Hawks, Los Angeles Clippers, Phoenix Suns and Toronto Raptors. McGuire averaged 11.1 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game in his only season in Cougar blue.
