SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Ryan VanDenburg scored the Cougars' first three goals as the Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team snapped a five-match winless streak with a 5-2 win over Marymount College on Wednesday afternoon at Mangrum Soccer Field.
VanDenburg scored in the fifth and 23
rd minute before converting a penalty kick in the 49
th.
Sullivan Tobin and
Jake Kaiser each scored in the second half to put the game out of reach.
“It was fantastic. Ryan's a terrific player – he's powerful, he's a good dribbler, a good striker of the ball,” said CSUSM head coach
Ron Pulvers. “And today he showed with his foot and his head that he can find the back of the net.”
The junior from Huntington Beach put CSUSM (2-5-3) ahead early after a combination in midfield by
Scott Rice,Tobin and
Eric Lopez. Lopez slid the ball to his right and VanDenburg took a touch before beating Marymount goalie Christos Voglis to the far post.
Voglis got the better of him 10 minutes later, stonewalling a free opportunity on the right side of the box.
However, VanDenburg got his second when he finished with a header after being unmarked on
Alex Brunsell's corner kick.
The Mariners nearly stole a goal on a counter attack in the 27

Cary Cousineau slid Rimar Daisely West inside the box to deny the shot. Marymount did get one before half time when a cross was deflected in off the shin of Rice.
The Cougars made it 3-1 three minutes into the second stanza. CSUSM earned a penalty kick after a Cougar was brought down inside the area. VanDenburg stepped up to take it and buried it to Voglis' left. The three goals were the first of the year for VanDenburg.
“I've been practicing, working real hard on my shooting after practice,” said VanDenburg. “It feels really good.”
Five minutes later in the 54

After some tense moments, Kaiser put the game away in the 89

“I think the group has been playing well. Today we played with purpose and energy, plus a lot more toughness,” said Pulvers.
