The Cal State San Marcos Women's Basketball team kicked off the New Year with a tight win over local rival Point Loma, winning 51-50 Thursday night. The Cougars held an 8-point advantage with just 3:22 remaining, but held on as Crissa Jackson's 3-pointer missed as time ran out.
The game was highly contested throughout, as neither team could open up a lead bigger than four in the first half, and Point Loma entered the second half with a 28-25 lead. CSUSM used a 10-0 run early in the second half to establish a 37-30 lead, but the host Sea Lions crawled themselves back with 6 consecutive points of their own to close the gap to 37-36.
The Cougars were able to stretch the lead back out to 8 when Michel'la Logan nailed a 3-pointer with 6:52 remaining, but made just one field goal the rest of the way, enabling Point Loma to make a late comeback, but San Marcos was able to stop Point Loma on the final possession to secure the win.
Point Guard
Sidney Dobner led the Cougars in scoring with 10 points, while also adding 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 steals. Michel'la Logan contributed 9 points and a team-high 7 rebounds on the night as well.
Cal State San Marcos is now 10-11 on the season, and Point Loma drops to 9-6. CSUSM plays next on the road against the University of La Verne January 9
th.
