Box Score In just the seventh match in team history, Coach
Andrea Leonard's Cal State San Marcos volleyball team has taken down the #7 ranked team in the nation.
Playing at the Biola Holiday Inn Summer Slam on Friday, CSUSM opened with a stunning five-set upset win over Lewis-Clark State, who are ranked seventh in the NAIA National poll. CSUSM took the marathon match 25-19, 23-25, 19-25, 25-23, 15-9.
The signature victory improves the Cougars to 4-3 on the season, with a game against #15-ranked Southern Oregon coming up later tonight. It was the first match of the year for LC State, who is now 0-1.
Taylor DeGraaf was an absolute force at the net for CSUSM all match long, leading the team with a program-record 30 kills and shining .350 hitting percentage. Lindsey Mitchell had 10 kills and 11 digs, and Kara Barkdoll had 8 kills and led the team with 2.5 blocks. Setter Alyssa Foster recorded 54 of the team's 61 assists.
CSUSM came out strong, pulling away late in the first set to take it 25-19, then carrying that momentum to an 11-3 lead in the second set. LC State would fight back, however, pulling even at 18-18 and winning by the narrowest of margins, 25-23.
LC State would continue its run with a relatively easy 25-19 third set win, putting CSUSM on the ropes. But the underdog Cougars would show tremendous heart, and with the fourth set tied 23-23, a service error followed by a Lyndsey Sappington ace evened the match at two sets apiece.
And the Cougars would go on to close it out, winning the last four points of the fifth set to end it in emphatic fashion. The match ended with an ace from Teanna Robinson followed by Barkdoll and Sappington combining for a block on match point to seal the win.
CSUSM will look to pull another upset tonight against #15 Southern Oregon.
