Cal State San Marcos softball pitcher
Brenna Sandberg has been named the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Pitcher of the Year for the second straight season, as her along with three teammates were named All-Conference on Wednesday.
CSUSM Head Coach Dave Williams also earned his second straight Conference Coach of the Year award.
Junior first baseman Alyssa Dronenburg, freshman second baseman Alex Miller, and freshman outfielder Derrisha Lacey all earned spots on the A.I.I. All-Conference Team, which was announced at Wednesday night's conference awards banquet in Carlsbad. The A.I.I. Conference Tournament is being hosted by Cal State San Marcos, and will begin Thursday morning at CSUSM Softball Field. Information can be found online at www.csusmcougars.com/aiisoftball.
Sandberg, a 2010 NAIA Second Team All-American, has leads the NAIA with 35 wins and 255.2 innings pitched. She is ranked nationally in the top-10 in strikeouts (322), hits allowed per 9 innings (4.40), opposing batting average (.143), and earned run average (1.10).
Dronenburg earned her third straight All-Conference nod, batting .385 on the season with a team-leading 9 home runs and 52 RBI. She walked 39 times and struck out just 24.
Miller burst onto the scene this season with a program-record .466 batting average in her freshman campaign, hitting 6 home runs and leading the team with 16 doubles and an .802 slugging percentage.
While Dronenburg and Miller anchored the middle of the lineup, Lacey proved to be a dangerous threat leading off, hitting .386 with a team-leading 33 stolen bases. She also led the team with 61 runs scored and did not commit an error in the outfield.
Coach Williams' Cougars are 39-7 this season, ranked a program-best #2 nationally entering the post-season. He earned his 600th career win as a collegiate coach earlier this year.
