Playing their final regular season contest of 2011, Cal State San Marcos finished on a high note in front of the home fans, defeating San Diego Christian College 13-4 on Tuesday.
CSUSM finishes the regular season 29-17. San Diego Christian closes out their season 6-36.
Tuesday was the sixth times these teams have met this season, and CSUSM was able to complete the season sweep with a dominating performance on the mound, in the field, and at the plate.
In his final career appearance at home, four-year starter Johnny Omahen got the call to start on the mound, and delivered the kind of performance fans have become accustomed to seeing out of the hard-throwing righty. Omahen tossed five innings of 3-hit, shutout ball, striking out 4 and walking 3. He got help from his defense as well, with third baseman Austin Coleman starting three double-plays in the game's first five innings. Omahen finishes the regular season with a 6-1 record and an ERA under 2.00.
Omahen exited the game up 2-0, but his offense quickly made it a much more comfortable margin, scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the fifth. Coleman led things off with a single, getting to third when the ball got away from the SDCC right fielder. Omahen added a quick sacrifice fly to make it 3-0, and Jeremy Baum got the rally started again with a base hit. After a pitching change, Anthony Renteria and Mike Mecucci drilled back-to-back RBI doubles to left, and a wild pitch and misplayed ball at third let Mecucci score. Trent Jemmett, who has been red-hot down the stretch, drilled a two-out RBI double, scoring pinch runner Cory McCloskey to make it 7-0.
CSUSM added six more in the seventh inning for good measure, highlighted by a Jordan Polchow RBI double, a Coleman two-run single, and a Renteria RBI triple.
Adam Bileckyj threw three solid innings of relief, allowing just 1 earned run on 3 hits. He struck out 2 and walked 1.
San Diego Christian's best chance to get into the game came in the seventh, but Cougar centerfielder Cory McCloskey disarmed the rally single-handedly, making a full-extension diving catch and doubling a runner off second for the inning's first two outs. SDCC would score just one run in the frame. They would hit two solo home runs in the ninth to make the final score 13-4.
CSUSM will be traveling all the way to Thomasville, Georgia to play in the A.I.I. Conference Championship next week. The four-team tournament will start on May 4th and run through May 6th, with the winner earning a trip to the NAIA National Championship Opening Round.
