10-Run First Inning Propels Baseball to Big Win

Jemmett leads the way with 4-hit day

Box Score Box Score

A school-record 10-run first inning put Monday's game at CSU San Marcos out of reach early, as San Marcos baseball soundly defeated Azusa Pacific 16-8.

CSUSM improves to 28-17 with one game remaining in the regular season.  APU drops to 24-21.

The home team put Monday's game out of reach early, putting up a 10-spot in the first and never looking back.  Kyle Secciani led things off with a base hit, and Trent Jemmett promptly drove him in with a double to center.  Kevin Silvett followed that up with a walk, and after an out, Johnny Omahen plated both runs with a double to left.  Jeremy Baum followed that up with an RBI single, and an Anthony Renteria double made it 6-0.  Marco Arellano followed that up with a base knock, scoring Renteria.  After a pitching change, Secciani drew a walk, and Jemmett delivered the biggest blow of the inning, a three-run bomb over the fence in left-center.

When the dust settled, CSUSM held a commanding 10-0 lead and had put the game well out of reach.

The home team would add to that with 3 in the second and another in the third to go up 14-0.  Azusa got its first run in the fourth, then 6 more in the sixth to make it a more respectable 14-7.  CSUSM would plate two more in the seventh, and Azusa got one in the top of the ninth to close out the contest 16-8.

Jemmett led the offensive explosion, going 4-for-5 with 5 RBI.  Parks added three hits, and Arellano, Secciani, Mike Mecucci, Austin Coleman, and Omahen all had a pair of base hits each.

On the mound, the beneficiary of the runs was starting pitcher Matt Kretchmer, who tossed 5+ innings to pick up the win.  Kretchmer struck out 6 batters and allowed 5 runs.  He improves to 6-1 on the year.  Andrew Larson, just two days after throwing four shutout innings to key the team's comeback win over Chapman, threw another 3 solid innings on Monday, allowing just 1 run on 2 hits to pick up the save.

CSUSM will play its final regular season game tomorrow at home against San Diego Christian, starting at 2:30 PM.
