With just three meets left before Nationals, Coach
Steve Scott's CSU San Marcos track & field team entered this weekend's UCSD Triton Invitational looking to keep their skills sharp, and meet as many qualifying marks as possible.
Yachi Fails did just that, leaping 5.64 meters in the long jump to earn the “A” qualifying standard, guaranteeing her a trip to May's National Championship. She finished 5th at the event.
Joining her will be fellow jumper Andrea Talhami, who won the triple jump event at UCSD; and perhaps more importantly, her distance of 11.54 meters earns her the “A” qualifying standard as well.
Michelle Cruz narrowly missed the 800-meter “B” standard, running 2:16.31 to finish 6th. Same for Lucia Asbury, who took 8th at 2:16.39.
In the 3,000-meter run, Suzanne Cornwell and Jessica Sandoval finished 4th and 5th, running 10:21.35 and 10:21.99, respectively.
Jenna Nicoll took second in the steeplechase at 12:00.65.
Marissa Daly cleared 1.59 meters in the high jump on Friday, tying for 5th.
The women's 4x400-meter relay team, which has already punched its ticket for Nationals, remained in fine form, running 3:52.71 to place 5th. The squad consists of Tiffany West, Asbury, Cruz, and Amber Rosario.
On the men's side, Brandon Baker took 5th in the 100-meter at 11.06 seconds, and 11th in the 200-meter at 22.04 seconds.
Ishmael Rodriguez was within 2 seconds of qualifying in the 1,500-meter, running 3:59.17 to finish 13th.
Next up for the Cougars is next week's UC Irvine Steve Scott Invitational, as CSUSM's own Coach Steve Scott will look to qualify more of his athletes at his namesake meet.
