Cougar team, fans come out to campus in full force

Cal State San Marcos and Coach Steve Scott played host to the third annual Mangrum Invitational on Saturday, with hundreds with a huge crowd of competitors and fans showing up at Mangrum Track & Soccer Field.

While CSUSM athletes were predictably involved in nearly every event, this year's Mangrum Invitational was clearly the largest of the three, with teams coming from Cal State Dominguez Hills, Azusa Pacific, UCSD, Vanguard, Soka, CSU San Bernardino, UC Irvine, Cal Baptist, and as far as Middlebury (VT).

The action didn't disappoint, with events taking place throughout the afternoon, and the competition culminating in an invitational mile won by CSUSM track & field alum Dave Edwards in 4:05.99, just ahead of current All-American Brett Campfield, who ran 4:06.87.

Women

Krystle Osby won the 100-meter dash, running 12.23 to meet the “B” qualifying standard for the NAIA National Championships.  Also competing were Aimee Rassavong (12.56), Tiffany West (12.76), Savanna Holmen (12.79), and Iris Ramirez (13.03).

Osby also competed in the 200-meter (25.69), along with Aimee Rassavong, who won her heat at 26.25 seconds.

Brianna Gibas ran in the 400-meter (60.30), as did Niki Thomas (66.65).

Lucia Asbury placed second in the 800-meter, running 2:17.51.  Michelle Cruz finished fourth in that same event at 2:17.96.  Also competing were Heidi Swanson (2:24.86), Jessican Sandoval (2:26.43), Kimberly Rowland (2:29.73), Brooke Smith (2:30.74), Kelly Skvarna (2:34.27), Melissa Olmos (2:34.82), Christina Cooper (2:34.91), Chandler Rezendes (2:36.29), Bridgette Stevens (2:36.91), and Nancy DiBenedetto (2:37.00).

Running in the 1,500-meter were Jessica Sandoval, who took 9th place at 4:52.61, Swanson (4:58.50), Suzanne Scrimenti (5:05.74), Ciera Stauffer (5:10.87), Stevens (5:18.23), Natalie Lotz (5:25.24), Olmos (5:27.59), and Reyna Gutierrez (5:30.41).

In the 3,000-meter run, Suzanne Cornwell took fourth place at 10:07.05.  Chelsey Cortez finished sixth at 10:29.53, and Sandoval placed 8th at 10:39.02.

Amber Rosario placed 5th in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.49 seconds.  She'll be representing CSUSM at Nationals in that event.  Holmen (17.14) and Natalia Bazzola (20.67) also competed.

The 4x100-meter relay team of Rassavong, Osby, West, and Holmen finished third with a time of 48.03 seconds, meeting the “B” standard for Nationals.  Meanwhile, the 4x400 team of Brianna Gibas, Asbury, West, and Rosario finished second at 3:55.53, while CSUSM's B team of Brooke Smith, Swanson, Stevens, and Ruth Spitsbergen took 7th at 4:26.23.

In the field, the Cougars swept the top four spots in the pole vault, clearing 3.19 meters.  Kelsey Monticalvo and Meghan Freund tied for second at 2.89 meters, Natalie Eisenberg placed fourth at 2.74 meters, and Suzannah Gallegos took sixth at 2.29 meters. 

Yachi Fails placed second in the long jump at 5.45 meters, within 4 centimeters of the qualifying standard for Nationals.  Katarina Payne (4.72 meters) competed, and Skvarna jumped 4.76 meters and also competed in the high jump (NH).  Payne posted a distance of 10.31 meters in the triple jump, finishing third.

Alison Ogilvie took 7th in the shot put (9.47 meters), 10th in the discus (30.24 meters), and 9th in the hammer throw (38.49 meters).  Rachelle Swatzell took 9th in the shot put (7.63 meters) and 15th in the discus (20.21 meters).  Skvarna took 11th in the javelin at 28.23 meters, while Natalia Bazzola placed 19th at 13.72 meters.

Men

Brandon Baker and Rolland Slade finished second and third in the 100-meter dash, running 11.03 and 11.28 seconds, respectively.  Bryan TenBosch (12.15) also competed.

Evan Laveist ran in the 400-meter (51.92).

Lenny Santana won his section of the 800-meter with a time of 1:58.08.  Chris Quintero (2:06.77) and Tyler Schieldge (2:09.28) also ran.

Santana took third overall in the 1,500-meter, running 3:59.50.  Jonathan Alpizar (4:00.75), Ishmael Rodriguez (4:01.65), David Cummings (4:07.86), Armando Lara (4:10.33), Josh Bollinger (4:16.60), Schieldge (4:19.77), Vicente Villalobos (4:20.97), and Dustin Blankenship (4:32.98) all ran as well.

Cummings placed second in the 3,00-meter at 8:43.31.  Ryan Jensen took seventh at 8:48.15, with Michael Hansen finishing 8th at 8:48.58.  Also competing were Kaiber Takamiya (9:22.12), Mark Shimmin (9:33.29), and Colton Underwood-Garside (9:56.46).

Olympian and Azusa Pacific alum Bryan Clay won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.10 seconds.  Steven Snodgrass competed and ran 17.34.

The 4x100 team of Slade, Baker, Hector Collazo, and Laveist finished sixth at 45.98, while the 4x400 team of Alpizar, Lara, Schieldge, and Santana took fourth at 3:37.59.  The team of Laveist, Collazo, Slade, and Rodriguez did not finish.

In the field, Snodgrass tied for second in the high jump at 1.76 meters.  In the pole vault, competing were Robert Concannon (4.09 meters), TenBosch (3.19 meters), and Dylan Kirchberg (2.59 meters).

In the long jump, Ashton Harvey (5.77 meters), TenBosch (5.62 meters), Jermaine Jackson (5.30 meters), and Daniel Delgado (5.03 meters) competed.  Jackson also recorded a distance of 11.73 meters in the triple jump.

Kirchberg took 11th in the shot put at 9.61 meters, and TenBosch finished 12th at 9.47 meters.  Matt Bruno placed 8th in the discus at 29.14 meters.  Finally, Kirchberg (48.37 meters) and Snodgrass (44.84 meters) competed in the javelin.
