Box Score Playing at home for the first time in more than two weeks, Cal State San Marcos baseball continued the momentum from its four-game sweep of Arizona Christian into Tuesday's contest with Master's College, winning 12-6.
CSUSM improves to 25-16 on the season. Master's drops to 24-22.
After a slow start to the season, the Cougars' bats continued to impress, as the team took a commanding early lead and was never threatened.
Up 3-2 in the fourth inning, CSUSM strung together six hits, which combined with three Master's errors led to a six-run inning. Ryle Parks led off with a base hit, and pinch runner Cory McCloskey advanced to second on a wild pitch. After an out, Mike Mecucci singled to put runners at the corner, and a Kyle Secciani sac fly made it 4-2. Trent Jemmett and Kevin Silvett then provided the inning's biggest blows, back-to-back booming doubles that scored two more. Austin Coleman followed with a base hit, and Johnny Omahen drove in the run with a ground ball that was booted by the third baseman. Jeremy Baum then hit a ball to the same spot that was similarly mishandled, and Ryle Parks drove a two-run base hit to push the lead all the way to 9-2.
At the plate, Jemmett led the charge on the day, going 3-for-4 with 3 runs scored. Omahen scored three as well and drove in a pair on two base hits, and Parks was 2-for-3 with those two RBI. The middle-of-the-lineup bats of Silvett and Coleman combined for 4 hits and 4 runs scored as well.
On the mound, it was pitching by committee for the Cougars, who started reliever Kyle Smart. Smart went 3 innings before being replaced by Adam Bileckyj for two, followed by Brett Miller, Matt Kretchmer, Matt Bataska, and Andrew Larson all throwing an inning each to close it out. Kretchmer and Bataska were most effective, working easy scoreless frames in the seventh and eighth innings.
The Cougars will be back at home to face Westmont College on Thursday.
