Track & Field: Mt. Sac Relays Recap

Cougars compete in prestigious meet.

Competing at the huge Mt. Sac Relays meet in Walnut, CA, Cal State San Marcos track & field finished up three days of competition on Saturday.  The field of teams included plenty of major NCAA Division I schools, including Texas, Colorado State, and many more.

Daniel Lyon got things going on Thursday, winning his section of the steeplechase and finishing fourth overall with a time of 9:04.67.  That's easily good enough to earn him the “A” qualifying standard for Nationals, where he's already qualified in the 5,000-meter.

Western Nelson ran in the 10,000-meter, placing 26th with a time of 30:05.96.  That earns him the “A” standard by more than a minute.

On Friday, Heidi Swanson took 9th in her section of the 1,500-meter run, hitting the “A” standard right on the dot at 4:40.10.  On the men's side, Brett Campfield's time of 3:55.83 met the “B” standard.

The women's 4x100-meter relay team met the “B” standard as well, with the group of Aimee Rassavong, Krystle Osby, Tiffany West, and Savanna Holmen combining to run 48.29.  The 4x400 team of Brianna Gibas, Lucia Asbury, Michelle Cruz, and West had previous met the “A” standard, and did so again with a time of 3:54.17 to finish 22nd overall.

Another athlete already heading to Nationals is Suzanne Cornwell, who posted a strong time of 17:09.36 to place 27th in her section of the 5,000-meter.  Same for Jessica Sandoval, who ran 17:24.30 to finish 30th in her section.

Saturday featured some of the world's best competitors in action, as well as a number of high school competitions.

The Cougars have three more meets before Nationals, starting with next week's UCSD Triton Invitational.
