Box Score Box Score

Cougar baseball completed an impressive 5-game season sweep of local rival San Diego Christian on Tuesday, winning 7-2 at CSUSM Baseball Field.

The win improves the Cougars' record to 12-9 this season.  San Diego Christian falls to 3-10.

CSUSM got a strong effort out of starting pitcher Matt Kretchmer, who went six full innings, allowing just two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three.  He moves to 3-0 on the year with the win.

San Diego Christian got both its runs in the second inning, but the Cougars quickly responded.  Jeremy Baum drew a leadoff walk, Anthony Renteria was hit by a pitch, and after an out, Mitch Ferguson drew a walk to load the bases.  That brought up Kyle Secciani, who delivered a big two-run double to tie the game.

CSUSM would take its first lead the following inning, with Austin Coleman leading off with a home run.  Walks to Ryle Parks, Baum, and Renteria would then load the bases, and Mitch Ferguson would make it 4-2 with a sac fly.

After missing a couple opportunities in the middle innings, the Cougars got some distance with a three-run eighth inning.  Trent Jemmett scored Secciani with a base hit, and after a Kevin Silvett single, Coleman came through with another big blow, a two-run double to make it 7-2.

Relievers Brett Miller and Kyle Smart did their jobs excellently, combining to pitch the final three innings scoreless with just one hit.  Smart closed the contest out with an easy ninth.

The Cougars will be back at home on Friday to take on La Sierra.
