Box Score 2 A daring double-steal in the 10
th inning broke a scoreless tie, as #8-ranked Cal State San Marcos rode the pitching of
Brenna Sandberg to upset undefeated #1 Cal Baptist on the road Tuesday night 1-0.
The Lancers would get revenge in game two, winning 7-0. CSUSM is now 11-4 on the season, while CBU suffers its first blemish of the year and is now 18-1.
Game one was a pitching dominated affair, with Sandberg facing off against Cal Baptist ace Emma Holden. Hits were few and far between, with Sandberg allowing her first in the fourth inning, and Holden carrying a no-hitter into the 8th.
Finally, with the international tiebreaker in effect in the 10
th inning, the Cougars broke through.
Alex Miller started the inning on second and was sacrificed to third by Heavin-Lee Rodriguez.
Theresa Houle drew a walk, and after a fly-out, Coach Dave Williams called for the double-steal with two outs. It worked, as Houle swiped second successfully and Miller came home with what turned out to be the game's only run.
Sandberg ended things emphatically in the 10th, striking out the side. She finished the game with 11 strikeouts, 4 walks, and just 3 hits allowed. Holden, for her part, struck out 17.
CBU came back in game two, taking a quick lead and never looking back. Pitcher Tory Ferreira allowed two hits in seven innings, with Miller and Houle recording the hits. CBU's Mara Rodriguez was 3-for-3 with 4 RBI's in the contest, as Cal Baptist won 7-0.
The Cougars will be in action on Saturday at Biola.
