Box Score 2 In a double-header that was moved up from Sunday to Saturday to beat the rain, Cal State San Marcos baseball gave the University of Sioux Falls a chilly reception in game one, winning 13-7.
USF would have its revenge though, taking game two 6-2.
San Marcos is now 15-10 on the season. USF is 8-6.
CSUSM got off to a quick start in game one, with Kyle Secciani drawing a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first and Johnny Omahen crushing an RBI double over the centerfielder's head to put the home team up 1-0.
After the Cougars went up 2-0 in the second courtesy of some aggressive baserunning by Jeremy Baum, Sioux Falls tied it in the top of third, and it might have been worse if not for a leaping catch at the wall by Anthony Renteria.
But it wouldn't stay tied for long, as the CSUSM lineup showed big-inning capability that was lacking earlier in the season. The big blows came back-to-back, with Omahen delivering a bases-clearing three-run double, and Austin Coleman following up with a no-doubt-about-it home run to left. At the end of the frame, San Marcos held a 9-2 lead.
Omahen would continue his big day in the fifth, driving in another the following inning as CSUSM went up 11-2.
Meanwhile, Adam Bileckyj was solid on the mound, throwing an easy 5 innings to pick up the win. He gave up just the two runs, striking out 5 and walking 2. CSUSM would go on to win 13-7. Omahen had a monster game, going 4-for-5 with 5 RBI.
Game two would tell a different story, however, as USF pitcher Noah Coleman shut down the CSUSM offense for a good portion of the contenst. Sioux Falls would score 3 in the second, 1 in the third, and 1 in the fourth to go up 5-0.
CSUSM's best opportunity of the game came in the fifth. A one-out error and walk put two on for Jardin Killinger, who singled up the middle to plate Mike Mecucci. Pinch hitter Ryle Parks then looped a single to right, loading the bases with one out for Jordan Polchow. Polchow put a great swing on the ball, ripping a line drive that USF second baseman Austin Goodenow snagged with a full-extension leaping catch, then easily doubled off the runner on first.
Coleman would drive in a run in the seventh and CSUSM reliever Matt Bataska kept his team in it with an inning and a third of scoreless work, but USF reliever Brandon Compton closed out the game with the final 6-2. Sioux Falls catcher Corey Vasquez was 3-for-3 with 3 RBI.
CSUSM will be playing plenty on spring break, starting with a rematch with Sioux Falls on Wednesday.
