Softball: Cougar Clash Day Six Recap

Sandberg strikes out 9 in game one, 12 in game two as Cougars sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2  After a two day break, the first annual Cougar Clash softball tournament concluded on Thursday, with NYU Poly, Hope International, and host school Cal State San Marcos playing three games on the day.

Game One
#8 CSU San Marcos – 8
NYU Poly – 0

Cal State San Marcos improved its record to 27-5 on the season, as the #8-ranked team in the NAIA cruised to an 8-0 win over NYU Poly in the morning match.  Pitcher Brenna Sandberg struck out 9 and allowed just 2 hits, throwing the full 5 innings before the game was called due to the mercy rule.  At the plate, Shanti Poston and Sarah Quiambao drove in a pair of runs each, as the Cougars scored 3 in the third and 4 in the fourth to put the game out of reach.

Game Two
Hope International – 0
#8 CSU San Marcos – 2

In what was a tight and competitive rematch of the tournament's biggest upset, Cal State San Marcos got a measure of revenge on Thursday, defeating Hope International 2-0.  Sandberg, who did not pitch in Monday's loss, was phenomenal on the mound, striking out 12 batters, allowing just 4 hits and 1 walk in a complete game shutout.  She moves to 24-4 on the year while her team improves to 28-5.  HIU pitcher Alexis Alonzo was solid as well, but a second inning RBI single by Shanti Poston and third inning sac fly by Alex Miller proved to be the difference in the game.

Game Three

NYU Poly - 1
Hope International – 6

The final game of the tournament was close early on, but Hope International pulled away late to pick up the 6-1 victory.  HIU pitcher Liz Gonzalez, despite falling behind 1-0 early, carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning.  She closed out the game allowing 4 hits and 1 run while striking out 6.  At the plate, 1-2 hitters Lauren Ackerson and Justine Medor both had two hits and two runs scored, with #3 hitter Caitlin Angel driving in a pair.
