Softball: Cougar Clash Day Five Recap

Hope International Upsets CSUSM in the last game of the day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2  The fifth day of the Cougar Clash softball tournament saw the biggest upset thus far, as Hope International knocked off host school #8-ranked Cal State San Marcos.  There will be no games on Tuesday and Wednesday, and the tournament will conclude with three games on Thursday.

Game One
Hope International – 2
NYU Poly – 4

NYU Poly picked up its first win of the tournament, riding the pitching of Lyndsey Rathburn to a 4-2 victory over Hope International.  Rathburn went the distance, striking out 2 batters to pick up the win.  HIU's Alexis Alonzo allowed just two runs in six innings herself, but NYU's offense led by Megan Moran (3-for-3, 2 RBI) did enough to secure the victory.

Game Two

NYU Poly - 0
#8 CSU San Marcos – 9

Alyssa Dronenburg's two-run homer in the first inning set the tone, as host school Cal State San Marcos rolled to a 9-0 victory in 5 innings over NYU Poly.  Speedy leadoff hitter Derrisha Lacey had three hits and two stolen bases, while Alex Miller and Shanti Poston added a pair of base hits each.  On the mound, pitcher Brenna Sandberg threw an easy four innings of one-hit ball, striking out 4.  Kristin Jaeger struck out the side in the fifth to end it.

Game Three
#8 CSU San Marcos – 4
Hope International – 7

Without Sandberg on the mound, Hope International jumped all over the Cougars with a five-run second inning to take a commanding early lead.  The Royals would go on to add two crucial runs in the fourth on a Lauren Ackerson home run that was very nearly brought back by centerfielder Alicia Ingram.  Ackerson was the catalyst of the offense, recording 5 RBI in the contest, while pitcher Liz Gonzalez did solid work on the mound, limiting an extremely dangerous CSUSM offense to just four runs.
