Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 A 4-0 win by host school #8 Cal State San Marcos over #13-ranked Dickinson State capped off what was an exciting Sunday of softball action at the Cougar Clash.
Game One
NYU Poly – 9
U. of British Columbia – 12
NYU Poly made its tournament debut with a bang, as freshman outfielder Megan Moran hit a three-run home run in her first collegiate at-bat to get the Blue Jays off to a strong start. But it was British Columbia who prevailed in the end, getting a strong 4 1/3 innings in relief from pitcher Kelsey Andison, as well as a grand slam from Lindsay McElroy. NYU Poly brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh inning, but Andison struck out the game's final batter to close out the win.
Game Two
#8 Cal State San Marcos – 2
U. of British Columbia – 1
The game turned into a classic pitcher's duel between Leigh Della Siega and Brenna Sandberg, with both pitchers stifling the opposing offenses for much of the contest. British Columbia took an early 1-0 lead on a Jess Barclay RBI single in the third, and as the game progressed that lead looked like it would hold.
But power-hitting Cougar first baseman Alyssa Dronenburg came to the rescue, leading off the sixth with a bomb to left-center field that tied the game. Alex Miller then drew a walk, and eventually a Shanti Poston single would plate pinch runner Kaitlin McGinley with what would be the winning run.
Della Siega picked up the tough-luck loss, allowing just two runs in six innings while striking out 6. Sandberg was dominant as usual, throwing 7 innings of 4-hit ball, striking out 9 and walking none.
Game Three
NYU Poly – 1
#13 Dickinson State – 9
After playing at Cal Baptist yesterday, Dickinson State was in fine form on Sunday, ending its game with NYU Poly after 5 innings. Taysia Kaufman was outstanding on the mound, allowing 2 hits and no walks while striking out 5 to pick up the win. Catcher Ikea Mauldin crushed the ball at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a home run and 3 RBI. Sara Jane Webster was 3-for-3 with 2 RBI, while Erica Nowack and Brittney Rivas had a pair of base hits each as well.
Game Four
#13 Dickinson State - 0
#8 CSU San Marcos – 4
The much-anticipated matchup between these teams lived up to the billing, as they played a tightly-contested and entertaining contest in front of a large crowd of fans. While Dickinson State starter Sara Jane Webster kept her team in the game, it was Sandberg who stole the show, striking out a team record 17 batters and allowing just one hit on a bunt single in the sixth inning. The win improves Sandberg to 21-4 on the year.
At the plate, a scoreless tie was broken in the third inning when Theresa Houle blasted an opposite-field home run over the fence in right to put her team up 2-0. Alicia Ingram and Shanti Poston would add RBI's later to make the final score 4-0.
