Softball: Cougar Clash Day Three Recap

CSUSM, Cal Baptist both sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2  Day three of the Cougar Clash softball tournament featured six games, half of which were played at CSU San Marcos and the other half at California Baptist University.

CAL STATE SAN MARCOS

Game One
Hope International – 2
Emerson College – 7

Down 2-1 in the seventh inning, Emerson won the game with a monster 6-run frame. Bianca Buono delivered a huge two-run base hit to put Emerson ahead, Lissa Pappas followed that up with a two-run double, and Sierra Wood capped off the inning by plating two more with a base hit.

Kelsey Tuthill went the distance on the mound, striking out 6 batters to earn the win.

Game Two

Emerson College – 0
#8 CSU San Marcos – 8

Host school Cal State San Marcos continued its run of ending games quickly, as the Cougars finished this one off after five innings. Pitcher Brittany Boone allowed just two hits to pick up the shutout. At the plate, Derrisha Lacey, Kimi Villalpando, and Shanti Poston all had a pair of hits each. The game ended on a Villalpando double that scored Heavin-Lee Rodriguez.

Game Three
Hope International – 0
#8 CSU San Marcos – 8

Down 4-0 in the fourth inning, Hope International had a golden opportunity to get back in the game, loading the bases with nobody out. But All-American pitcher Brenna Sandberg shut down the rally promptly, striking out the side to escape the inning. Sandberg picked up her 19th win of the season, striking out 13 batters in 6 shutout innings.

At the plate, second baseman Alex Miller provided most of the pop, crushing a two-run home run and RBI double, and ending the game in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly.

CAL BAPTIST

Game One
#13 Dickinson State – 7
British Columbia – 3

Dickinson State remained undefeated at the Cougar Clash and is on a collision course with Cal State San Marcos, with their game set for Sunday at CSUSM. British Columbia's defense committed three errors, resulting in six unearned runs. DSU pitcher Taysia Kaufman pitched a complete game to earn the win, and shortstop Nicole Youngblood led the team with 3 RBI.

Game Two
#13 Dickinson State – 0
#1 Cal Baptist – 8

Top-ranked Cal Baptist made their Cougar Clash debut on their home field, ending Dickinson State's unbeaten run at the tournament with a decisive 8-0 win in 5 innings. Pitcher Emma Holden was perfect, striking out 10 and retiring all 15 batters she faced. Four different CBU players hit home runs: Briana Corral, Kendall Gorham, Mara Rodriguez, and Tina Galinto.

Game Three
British Columbia – 3
#1 Cal Baptist – 4

It was a much different story in the day's final game, as British Columbia gave the top-ranked team in the NAIA all they could handle, with the Lancers pulling it out in extra innings. UBC's Leigh Della Siega was great on the mound, going the distance and striking out 8 while limiting CBU's powerful offense to just three earned runs.

The Lancers persevered, however, winning it on the strength of three more home runs, winning the game on an error in extras.
