Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Host school Cal State San Marcos made its presence felt on day two of the Cougar Clash softball tournament, with pitcher
Brenna Sandberg throwing a perfect game in game one, and following that up with a no-hitter in game two. The #8-ranked Cougars ended both contests in five innings via the mercy rule.
CSUSM wasn't the only undefeated team on the day, however. Dickinson State improved its record at the tournament to an impressive 4-0 with a pair of victories on Friday. In the late game, British Columbia picked up its first win of the tournament in grand fashion.
Game One
Cal State San Marcos – 17
Emerson College – 0
An 8 AM start time did nothing to tire the Cougars' bats, as the host school scored five in the first and five in the second to put this contest out of reach early. Second baseman
Alex Miller led the offense, going 3-for-4 with a home run, 3 runs scored, and 3 RBI; and catcher
Jalisa McCarvel added a home run as well. In total, 11 Cougars had both a hit and at least one run scored or RBI.
Meanwhile, Sandberg was brilliant on the mound, tossing a perfect five innings before the game was called due to the mercy rule. The 2010 NAIA All-American faced 15 batters and struck out 13 of them.
Game Two
Dickinson State – 7
Emerson College – 0
After two wins on Thursday, Dickinson State continued to impress on Friday, shutting out Emerson in the second match of the day. Pitcher Taysia Kaufman tossed a four-hit complete game shutout, striking out 4 and walking 1.
At the plate, a six-run second inning keyed the win for DSU. The big blow was a two-run home run to left by #9 hitter Brittney Rivas.
Game Three
Cal State San Marcos – 9
U. of British Columbia – 0
The only base runner Sandberg allowed all day was the very first batter in this game, as Carlyn Shimizu led off with a walk. Sandberg recorded 4 strikouts while retiring the next 15 in order before the contest was called due to the mercy rule in the fifth inning.
CSUSM's offense didn't explode right away, scoring twice in the first three innings, but a five-run fourth put the Cougars firmly in command. A three-run double by
Alyssa Dronenburg was the game's biggest hit; and the following inning Dronenburg doubled home two more to end the game.
Game Four
Dickinson State – 4
Hope International – 2
What looked like a sure victory for Dickinson State for most of the game nearly fell apart late, as Hope International rallied in the seventh inning but ultimately came up a little short, as DSU remained undefeated at the tournament. Dickinson State pitcher Sara Jane Webster struck out seven while going the distance to earn the win, and her 3 RBI's at the plate were the difference.
Down 4-0 in the seventh, Hope International's Leslie Coffee led off with a double. After she scored on an error, Lauren Ackerson tripled home another run to make it 4-2. Webster was unfazed, however, inducing a groundout and striking out the final two batters to close out the contest.
Game Five
U. of British Columbia – 10
Hope International – 2
A Courtney O'Connor grand slam in the fourth turned what was a close game into what became a 5-inning mercy rule win for British Columbia, as the Thunderbirds picked up their first victory of the tournament. Pitcher Leigh Della Siega went all five innings to earn the win.
Third baseman Molly Gosnell added 2 hits, 2 runs, and 2 RBI, and shortstop Jess Hodge scored 3 runs in the win.
