Everyday shortstop and occasional pitcher
Johnny Omahen struck out nine batters in five innings on Friday, as Cougar baseball cruised to a 6-1 victory at home over La Sierra.
The win improves CSUSM to 13-9 on the season. La Sierra drops to 1-14.
It wasn't all Omahen though, as relievers
Johnny Holtman,
Brett Miller, and Geoff Landry combined to allow just one unearned run in the game's final four innings. CSUSM pitchers combined to strike out 13 batters in the contest.
At the plate, the Cougars did their damage early. In the first inning,
Kyle Secciani led off with a single and was promptly driven in by a
Trent Jemmett double.
Kevin Silvett then plated Jemmett with an RBI base knock, advancing to second on the throw and scoring on an
Austin Coleman base hit to put the Cougars up 3-0 early.
The Cougars would push it to 6-0 in the fourth.
Anthony Renteria was hit by a pitch leading off,
Jordan Polchow singled, and after a fielder's choice,
Kyle Secciani delivered a big two-run triple. He would score on a Jemmett sac fly to cap off the Cougars' scoring on the day.
La Sierra got its run in the top of the ninth following an error, but Landry escaped with no further damage. Omahen earned the win to improve his record to 3-1 on the season.
The Cougars will play an exhibition game at home against Pacifica College tomorrow.
