Baseball Sweeps La Sierra at Home

Parks misses the cycle by a triple, settles for 6 RBI game one.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2  Friday was a good all-around day for Cougar baseball, as the squad posted a double-header sweep at home against La Sierra, winning 13-3 and 9-1.

CSUSM improves to 9-6 on the season.  La Sierra drops to 1-13.

Though the games were not the gaudy blowouts that many between these teams in the past have been, the Cougars were still firmly in command from start to finish.  Both the lineup and pitching staff came through, with CSUSM delivering a combined 22 runs on 26 hits at the plate, and just one earned run in 16 innings on the mound.

Two pitchers making their first starts of the season, Johnny Omahen and Richard Martin, both performed well.  Omahen threw five innings in game one, allowing just two hits and striking out three batters.  Greg La Barre and Abraham Torres closed out the contest in relief.  Martin threw three scoreless innings in game two, striking out five.  He got solid relief Andrew Larsen, who was dynamite in two innings of work, recording four strikeouts.  Matt Rossio threw a scoreless inning, Matt Bataska threw an inning, and Brett Miller closed out the game with two perfect innings.

At the plate in game one, Ryle Parks was the hitting star, going 3-for-4 with a home run, double, and 6 RBI.  Austin Coleman added another home run, going 2-for-3 with 3 runs and 3 RBI.  Kevin Silvett was 3-for- 4 with 3 runs scored as well.

Game two was a more balanced effort, with nine different Cougars recording a hit, including Jeremy Baum's first home run of the season.  Baum, Torres, and Mike Mecucci had a pair of base hits each.  CSUSM also stole 8 bases.

The Cougars will face Biola at home on Monday starting at 2 PM.
