Box Score Playing on their home field on Friday, Cal State San Marcos gave #3-ranked California Baptist everything it could handle for all 9 innings, but the Lancers ultimately prevailed 2-0.
CSUSM drops to 6-2 on the year. Cal Baptist improves to 8-1.
The loss wastes what was a brilliant performance by junior pitcher
Adam Bileckyj. A transfer from San Diego City College, Bileckyj shut down the Lancers' powerful lineup for six innings, allowing just one hit – which came on an infield single. He did not factor in the decision.
Cal Baptist scored once off the bullpen in the seventh, then manufactured another in the ninth on a safety squeeze. Still, the Cougars would have their chances, bringing the potential go-ahead run to the plate in the eighth, and the potential tying run up in the ninth. The Cougars actually recorded 4 hits to the Lancers' 3, and had runners on base all day thanks to 6 walks.
But the Lancers' pitching staff proved too much, with starter Drew Madrigal throwing 5 innings, and reliever Erik Wallace taking over and tossing 4 innings of one-hit ball. Wallace picked up the win.
These teams will meet for a double-header tomorrow in Riverside.
