Box Score Adam Bileckyj's seven shutout innings on the mound and a five-run seventh inning at the plate keyed CSU San Marcos baseball to a decisive 7-0 home win over #8-ranked Point Loma on Tuesday.
The Cougars improve to 3-1 on the young season. Point Loma drops to 0-1.
For the fourth time in as many games, CSUSM got an excellent performance from its starting pitcher. This time it was Bileckyj, who struggled on Friday coming out of the bullpen in his debut, but looked completely at home starting on Tuesday. The junior went seven strong in his first start as a Cougar, allowing no runs and striking out seven batters against the formidable Sea Lions' lineup.
Bileckyj got plenty of support from his own lineup, as CSUSM scratched away for a pair of runs before blowing the game open in the seventh. In the third inning,
Victor Serna singled with one out, stole second and advanced to third when the ball was thrown away, and came home on a dropped fly ball by the right fielder. In the fifth,
Kyle Secciani laid down a perfect bunt single with two outs and nobody on, advanced to second when
Austin Coleman was hit by a pitch, and came home on a
Kevin Silvett base knock.
Holding a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the seventh, the Cougars would leave nothing to chance. Serna led off with a single and scored on a Coleman sac fly, leaving two on and no outs with the Cougars up 3-0. But the lineup was far from done, continuing to churn away and score runs: Silvett doubled,
Jeremy Baum hit an RBI single and stole second,
Trent Jemmett drove Baum home with a single and stole second,
Michael Mecucci walked, both runners advanced on a wild pitch,
Marco Arellano drove home Baum with a base hit, and finally
Johnny Omahen plated Mecucci with yet another single.
When the dust settled, CSUSM held a 7-0 lead.
Reliever
Kyle Smart worked easily through the eighth and ninth innings to close out the win. CSUSM remains undefeated on its new home field, and over 200 fans showed up to support the team on Tuesday.
CSUSM will be back in action this weekend for a three-game series against San Diego Christian, playing Friday in El Cajon then a Saturday double-header at home starting at 11:00 AM.
