Playing locally in La Jolla, Cal State San Marcos women's basketball had a tough time against NCAA Division II contender UC San Diego in their first game at the UCSD Classic on Friday night, falling 85-55.

The Cougars drop to 4-6 in their inaugural season.  UCSD improves to 5-0.

CSUSM came out strong, holding a 12-8 lead after 5 minutes.  But the Tritons answered with a 14-0 run that set the tone for the rest of the night.  UCSD led by 17 at halftime and was no closer than that at any point in the final 20 minutes.

Turnovers have been a problem for the Cougars at times this year, and a tough UCSD defense forced the visitors into 29 on Friday.  CSUSM shot right about 40% from the field - certainly a respectable shooting day – but attempted 23 fewer shots than their opponents.

Post player Gabriell Musnch and point guard Sidney Dobner tied for the team lead with 14 points apiece.  Munsch shot 7-for-11 from the field and added 7 rebounds and 3 assists in 30 solid minutes of work.  Dobner shot 6-for-9 but was limited to 3 assists against 7 turnovers.

Alongside Munsch in the post, Danielle Cooper recorded a game-high 10 rebounds.

CSUSM has already shown excellent resilience against a very tough early-season schedule, and will look to bounce back against CSU San Bernardino tomorrow.
