Box Score Jacob Ranger's 26 points on just 9 shots led Cal State San Marcos men's basketball to a win in its first game at the Holy Names Invitational on Friday, holding on to defeat the host school 85-80.
CSUSM is now 4-3 on the year. Holy Names drops to 4-4.
The Cougars continued their hot shooting as of late, knocking down 58% of their shots from the field including 66.7% (6-for-9) from behind the arc. Coach
Jim Saia's squad held a 49-35 lead at the half, and held on to survive a rally from the home team late thanks largely to solid 84% (21-for-25) free throw shooting on the night.
CSUSM held a 34-24 advantage in rebounds as well.
But the story of the night was Ranger, whose aggressiveness got him to the free line a team record 16 times, of which he hit 12. Ranger also added 4 three-pointers, putting up 26 points and 7 rebounds off the bench.
Tim Steed also had a nice game, scoring 22 points and dishing out 4 assists. Point guard
Danny Redmon recorded his second straight strong game, scoring 10 points on 5-for-6 shooting and recording a team-high 6 assists.
CSUSM will be back in action tomorrow when they finish up play at the tournament against William Jessup.
