Coach Sheri Jennum's CSUSM women's basketball squad finished a very successful road trip to Oregon Monday night, defeating NCAA Division II opponent Western Oregon 64-59.
CSUSM improves to 4-5 in its inaugural season, after finishing the Oregon trip with a 3-1 record. WOU drops to 0-4.
In contrast to the team's previous two wins on the trip, which came in tight games, the Cougars dominated the proceedings from tip-off Monday night, with the home team only closing the gap a bit once the game was seemingly well in-hand. The Cougars led by as many as 20 in the second half, and though Western Oregon cut it to 5 with 1:44 left, a layup by Mackenzie Harnett followed immediately by a
Sidney Dobner steal leading to a Michel'la Logan layup effectively sealed the game.
The Cougars built their lead with great early-game defense, holding Western Oregon to 17 first half points on 6-for-27 shooting (22%). For their part, the Cougars scored 33 points on 13-for-25 shooting (52%) in the first half.
One night after Logan, Dobner, and
Cassie Damyanovich scored over 85% of the team's points, Monday night was a much more balanced effort for the Cougars' offense. Harnett led the team with 12 points on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting, with
Gabriell Munsch scoring 11 on an efficient 4-for-5 shooting, and Dobner adding 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists.
Danielle Cooper had an effective game inside, recording 10 rebounds and 6 points, while Logan scored 9 and had 3 boards.
CSUSM did its damage inside, leading heavily on Harnett, Munsch, and Cooper to control play, which they did. CSUSM attempted just 4 three point attempts on the night, hitting one.
The Cougars will be heading back to Southern California to play locally in the UCSD Classic starting this Friday.
