After a fierce schedule to begin the year followed by a relatively light stretch of games as of late, Coach
Andrea Leonard's #15-ranked Cal State San Marcos volleyball team played its first double-header in nearly a month on Friday, and rose to the occasion with two victories.
CSUSM defeated Johnson & Wales in 3 sets, then against host school La Sierra dropped the first set but roared back to win in 4. The Cougars improve to 19-6 on the year.
CSUSM was in peak form in the day's first game, blitzing Johnson & Wales with a lopsided 25-6 win in the opening game. The Cougars would go on to win the second 25-18 and the third 25-16, never really at risk of losing.
Taylor DeGraaf led CSUSM with 8 kills, while
Lindsey Sappington added 7 and a .636 hitting percentage.
Erin Talafus had 5 kills as well.
Nichole May led the team with 8 digs, as usual, and was dynamite from the service line with a game-high 6 aces.
The second match would begin differently, however, with La Sierra controlling the first game and winning 25-19, beating the Cougars' normally stalwart defense with a .483 team hitting percentage.
Coach Leonard's squad would not panic, however, and quickly corrected any issues to take back control of the match. The Cougars won the second and third sets both by scores of 25-17, and took the fourth set 25-20 to close out the match.
May led in digs again with 19, to go along with DeGraaf's 16 digs and team-high 16 kills.
Lindsey Mitchell had a strong match, recording 11 kills and a .321 hitting percentage, and
Kara Barkdoll added 7 kills. Setter
Alyssa Foster recorded a game-high 41 assists.
CSUSM will be back in action at La Sierra tomorrow.
