Coach Steve Scott's track & field team is yet to compete at a full team event, but they've already got three athletes qualified to compete at the National Championship.
At the Surf City USA Marathon over the weekend, Cougar runners Western Nelson, Chris Capeau, and Lindsey McKown all met NAIA qualifying standards by running in the half marathon. They will compete in the full marathon at Nationals.
Nelson finished 7th in the field of over 11,000, running a time of 1:11:33. Right behind him was Capeau, who took 8th with a time of 1:11:49. Both met the NAIA's "A" standard of 1:14:00, guaranteeing them a spot in the marathon field at Nationals.
McKown ran 1:33:02, good for the NAIA's "B" standard and just two seconds off the "A" standard. She finished 31st among the 7,500+ women running in the race.
The Cougar women's indoor team will compete in its first event next Saturday at the APU Indoor Qualifier, and the first outdoor track & field event for the Cougars will be the Rossi Relays on February 27th.
