Box Score 2 Kevin Silvett's 9-RBI game one performance highlighted a big day for the Cougar offense, as the squad teed off on La Sierra at Escondido High School on Friday, winning game one 27-3 and game two 9-3.
As was the case in last year's five meetings (all won by CSUSM), the Cougar lineup put on a prodigious display of offense in game one. Silvett was the headliner, extending his team-leading home run total to 8 with a grand slam in the fourth inning, part of his 4-for-5, 5 run, 9 RBI game.
Also posting big numbers were Matt Jenkins, who went 4-for-6 with 5 RBI; Ryle Parks, who was 3-for-4 and just a double shy of the cycle; and Patrick Gray, who was 2-for-2 with a home run and 3 RBI off the bench.
On the mound, starting pitcher Chris Skaalen tossed four innings, allowing one earned run to pick up the win. The bullpen was in top form, as Eric Julienne, Spencer Pardon, and Ricky Chavarria combined to finish the game off with three perfect innings of relief.
CSUSM put up a more modest run total in game two, though still won comfortably. Johnny Holtman started the game and was fantastic on the mound, at one point striking out six consecutive batters, including a team-record four in the second inning. He did not allow a hit in three innings of work.
Reliever McClinton Heil allowed three unearned runs, but the rest of the Cougar bullpen was flawless. Auggie Richardson and Andy Galaviz tossed easy 1-2-3 innings, and flame-throwing shortstop Johnny Omahen continued to impress on the mound, striking out two of three hitters in the seventh to close out the game.
At the plate, CSUSM scored four in the first, one in the second, one in the third, and three in the sixth to put the game out of reach. Steve Harris led the charge, going 3-for-3 with a 3 RBI and a home run. Silvett continued his hot hitting, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored, and Ricardo Moran and Kyle Secciani scored a pair of runs each.
CSUSM will face off against San Diego Christian on Tuesday.
