Competing in front of hundreds of spectators on the campus of Cal State San Marcos, Coach Steve Scott's track & field team gave the fans plenty to cheer about at the second annual Mangrum Invitational.
Anthony Harbor made quite the first impression, dazzling the fans with the blend of versatility and explosive speed that's already earned him five qualifying marks for May's NAIA National Championships. He defeated a stacked field in the 400-meter hurdles, running 52.56 to finish in first place.
Harbor also helped the Cougar men's 4x400-meter relay team to a victory. The squad of Brett Campfield, Nicholas Stein, Yuto Someya, and Harbor completed the relay in 3:17.24, more than 4 seconds clear of Point Loma. Stein also took second in the individual 400-meter dash at 49.66 seconds.
Campfield was another big winner on the day. The Princeton transfer won the 800-meter run with a time of 1:52.58, finishing ahead of the 10 USC runners in the race.
Dave Edwards notched another victory for CSUSM, edging out a UCSD runner to win the 1,500-meter run at 3:54.12.
Sean Grindley also won his event with a javelin throw of 50.04 meters.
In the men's 100-meter dash, Nicholas Henderson took second at 10.93 seconds, and Thomas McDougald placed third at 10.95 seconds. The duo took those same places in the 200-meter as well, running 21.98 seconds and 22.00 seconds, respectively.
Western Nelson took second in the 3,000-meter run at 8:39.91.
In the field, David Freund finished second in the pole vault, clearing 4.65 meters.
On the women's side, Monika Valenzuela won the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.02 seconds. Teammate Brianna Murdoch finished third at 58.86.
Lucia Asbury, known by Cougar fans for her blinding speed as both a forward and defender on the women's soccer team, finished first in the 800-meter at 2:18.05. Carol Schryver took third at 2:22.78.
Cross-country star Jessica Sandoval took second in the 1,500-meter run at 4:52.80.
Jen Albright finished third in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:44.59.
The women's 4x100-meter relay team of Aimee Rassavong, Krystle Osby, Mary Spinharrey, and Valenzuela took third at 48.19. The 4x400 team of Osby, Murdoch, Asbury, and Valenzuela also placed third at 3:57.85.
In the field, Andrea Talhami placed second in the triple jump with a distance of 11.44 meters, and Chantel Hicks took third in the discus at 33.27 meters.
Cougar track & field will be in action again next Saturday at the JJK/UCLA Invitational.
