Baseball Defeats Chapman 7-3, Earns 30th Win of the Season

Box Score Kyle Smart's five scoreless innings on the mound keyed Cougar baseball's school-record 30th win of the season, as CSUSM went on the road to defeat Chapman University 7-3.

CSUSM improves to 30-13 on the year.  Chapman drops to 24-8.

Six different Cougars drove in runs as the team's offense turned in a balanced effort that helped the team grab the lead early and never let go.  A Ryle Parks sacrifice fly in the first brought home Kyle Secciani with the game's first run, and RBI's from Kevin Silvett and Josh Miller put CSUSM up 3-0 in the third.

That was in support of Smart, who continued his great work on the mound as of late.  Smart stranded two runners in both the third and fourth innings to maintain that early lead, en route to tossing five innings of five-hit shutout ball.  He walked two and struck out one to pick up the win.

Meanwhile, Ricardo Moran made it 4-0 in the fourth with an RBI double, and Mike Pena drove in Parks in the 7th to put CSUSM up 5-0.

Reliever Johnny Holtman worked three innings, recording four strikeouts and giving up just one run in the seventh; and after CSUSM added insurance runs in each of the final two innings, Spencer Pardon came on in the ninth, and despite allowing two runs (one earned) was able to close out the 7-3 win.

The Cougars will play their final regular season game this Monday at Poway High School at 6:00 PM against Azusa Pacific.  After that, it's off to the Association of Independent Institutions conference tournament, starting May 5th in Jackson, TN.
