Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Erica Coelho, Alyssa Dronenburg, and Lauren Nelson all went deep as CSUSM softball reached the 30-win plateau for the second-straight season, sweeping Biola on the road 3-2 and 5-2 on Tuesday.
The Cougars, ranked #13 in the nation in today's NAIA poll, improve to 31-11 this season. Biola falls to 17-19.
In game one, the CSUSM offense flexed its muscles early, taking a 2-0 lead in the second inning thanks to Coelho's two-run home run - her first of the season.
The 2-0 lead persisted until the sixth, when the Cougars got what turned out to be a crucial insurance run. After an Alicia Ingram single, Nelson drove in the run with a clutch two-out RBI double.
That run would prove huge, because Biola broke through against Cougar ace Brenna Sandberg in the sixth, as Biola starting pitcher Lyndsie Roberts helped her own cause with a two-RBI double. Sandberg would escape the inning, however, and survive two base hits in the seventh to close out the 3-2 victory.
Sandberg's finished with 7 innings pitched, 5 hits, 3 runs, 1 walk, and 2 strikeouts.
In game two, she would post a similar line, going the distance again and striking out 6 while allowing 2 runs on 7 hits.
After Nelson led off the second inning with a home run to put CSUSM up 1-0, Biola scored both its runs in the bottom of the third to take its first lead of the afternoon.
Dronenburg would quickly tie it back up, crushing her team-record 15th home run of the season in the top of the fourth.
And in the following innings, the Cougar offense would prove too much. A big RBI double by Ciera Ashman capped off a two-run fifth that put CSUSM back up 4-2, and Mimi Krutein would single in Erica Coelho the following inning, making the final score 5-2.
CSUSM will continue to make its push to Nationals on Saturday at Point Loma.
