Box Score 2 Brenna Sandberg pitched a complete game shutout as CSUSM Cougars defeated Tennessee Wesleyan 8-0 Tuesday morning. Sandberg then turned in 6 more innings of flawless pitching in the afternoon contest, which CSUSM claimed victory 5-0. These wins improved the Women's softball record to 10-6 overall.
Sandberg's effort was assisted by the timely hitting of the Cougars' offense, which produced 8 runs with only 7 hits in the first game. The middle of the infield paced the Cougar's offensive barrage, as shortstop Shanti Poston and second baseman Erica Coelho drove in 5 runs and recorded 4 hits combined.
Wesleyan's unraveling came in the fourth as a crucial error and hit batswoman put runners on with no outs. Before Tennessee could record the final out of the inning, CSUSM scored 3 runs and took control of the game.
Three runs was plenty for Sandberg in Game 1, who fanned six over six frames, allowing only one hit. The Cougars' victory was capitulated on a successful steal of home plate by Coelho, which sealed the game for CSUSM.
The second contest showed the Cougars' bats waking up, as 13 hits contributed to the 4 earned runs against Tennessee pitcher Paige Goins. Nearly every regular recorded a hit for CSUSM, as Sandberg struck out another 4 batters and improved her overall record to 9-3 after today's contests.
CSUSM Cougars' next home game will be Friday March 12th, as we host Biola University at CSUSM's softball field.
