Box Score 2 In a battle of two ranked teams on Tuesday, #23 Cal State San Marcos went on the road to defeat #11 Concordia 7-0 in game one, but fell 5-2 in game two.
The split makes the Cougars 24-10 this season, while Concordia moves to 30-12.
CSUSM got on the board with a run in the first, then scored another in the fourth, two in the sixth, and three in the seventh to put the game out of reach. Alyssa Dronenburg and Erica Coelho tallied three hits each, and Lauren Nelson and Alicia Ingram each scored a pair of runs. Shanti Poston, Kimi Villalpando, and Ashley Estepa all had RBI's as well.
Pitcher Brenna Sandberg was terrific, going all 7 innings and holding Concordia's powerful offense to just six hits. She struck out 8 and walked 2 en route to picking up her NAIA-leading 23rd win of the season.
The Cougars also took advantage of four Concordia errors while committing just one error of their own.
Game two would unfold differently, however, with Concordia's offense getting to Sandberg for five runs. A three-run home run in the second by Alyssa Erickson was the big blow, as it gave the Eagles a lead they would never let go of.
CSUSM managed just two runs off CUI starter Jennifer Simons, who went the distance. In the top of the first, Ingram reached on an error, Ciera Ashman singled her to third, then baited the catcher into throwing her out at second while allowing Ingram to score.
In the fifth inning, Ingram drove in Elizabeth Bush with an opposite-field triple.
It would not be enough, however, as Concordia closed out the game to earn the split.
The Cougars will be in action tomorrow at Patten, then Thursday at Bethany.
