Box Score #20-ranked Cougar softball finished up play at the Sun West Tournament with a flawless record, defeating St. Thomas (MN) 5-0 and host school Chapman University 7-3.
The wins, along with Thursday's two dominating victories, improves the Cougars to 18-6 this season, and pushed their win streak to 10 games.
Against St. Thomas, Brenna Sandberg continued the great run she's been on. The smooth righty tossed six innings of shutout ball, striking out ten and walking none while allowing just two hits.
At the plate, first baseman Alyssa Dronenburg stayed red hot, blasting a two-run home run in the first inning to give the Cougars a lead that would never be threatened. She's now hit 10 home runs this season.
CSUSM padded the lead in the seventh, thanks to RBI's from Ashley Estepa, Alicia Ingram, and Ciera Ashman. Chanel Rose would pitch the game's final inning to close out the 5-0 win.
In the night game, a costly error would open the door for Chapman to take a 3-0 lead in the first inning - but the reslient Cougars wouldn't be held down for long.
Estepa led off the third with a double, and singles by Bush and Ingram loaded the bases. That brought up Ashman, and she cashed in with a big two-RBI double. After a walk to Dronenburg loaded the bases, Erica Coelho drew another walk to tie the game. After an out, Kimi Villalpando drove an RBI single to left, and Mimi Krutein plated a run on a fielder's choice to put CSUSM up 5-3.
In the fifth, Villalpando and Krutein would each drive in a run to extend the lead to 7-3.
Sandberg went the distance on the mound, allowing just the three unearned runs. She worked around 6 hits, striking out 8 and walking 1. The game was called after five innings.
Sandberg is now an NAIA-best 17-3 this season.
Cougar softball will face a tough challenge to its win streak on Sunday at UC San Diego.
