CSUSM softball ruins the Bruins in Saturday's double header

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Cougar's string of consecutive wins reached six today as women's' softball coasted to 8-1 and 9-0 victories against Bethany University.  The victories were highlighted by starting pitcher Brenna Sandberg's 9 innings of no-hit softball and first baseman Alyssa Dronenburg 2 home runs with 6 RBIs across both contests.

The first game was defined by Dronenberg's round trippers in the first and fourth innings, as Bethany Unviersity starting pitcher Jessica Cantu surrendered seven earned runs over 6 frames. Shortstop Shanti Poston also contributed 2 RBI's while second baseman Erica Coelho collected three hits, scoring twice.

The second game featured a thrilling no-hit complete game by Sandberg, as Bethany University fanned 6 times over 5 innings.  Today's games improved Sandberg to 13-3 overall and a team leading 1.46 ERA.

CSUSM's pitching overshadowed a complete offensive effort from its starters, as every player reached base against Bethany University pitcher Katelyn Heinrich.  Heinrich surrendered 9 runs on 13 hits against CSUSM, as a Cougar 8-run outburst in the fourth inning unraveled the opposing pitcher's promising start.

Sandberg and the Cougar's offense was too much firepower for Bethany University, as the Bruins' only relief came by NAIA's mercy rule deeming CSUSM's lead too insurmountable to overcome. Overall, the Cougars' softball team improved to 14-6 on the season. Their next contest will be March 18th at the Sun West Tournament in Los Angeles, against the University of Peugeot Sound.
