Softball Improves to 4-0 with Sweep of Southern Oregon

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Playing at CSUSM Softball Field in ominous weather conditions , Cougar softball swept Southern Oregon on Friday, winning game one 11-5 and game two 4-2.

The Cougars improve to 4-0 on the young season, while Southern Oregon drops to 0-4.

While during last Saturday's home opener the Cougars were in control from start to finish in both games, today the team's resilience was tested.  In the second inning of game one, Southern Oregon took advantage of some sloppy defense that unfortunately persisted throughout the entire afternoon.  They plated five runs in the inning to go up 5-0.

Pitcher Brenna Sandberg and her team would recover, though, not surrendering a run the rest of the game.

And at the plate, the San Marcos bats would come alive to regain the lead.  Lauren Nelson went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI's and her first home run of the season, and Erica Coelho also had a pair of hits and RBI's.  The Cougars took the lead in the fifth off a costly dropped pop up, then extended it with a five-run sixth keyed by big base hits from Alyssa Dronenburg and Coelho.

The Cougars carried that comeback momentum into game two, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning.   Elizabeth Bush led off with a single, and scored when the defense attempted to throw out Lauren Nelson stealing second, allowing Bush to trot home.   On the next pitch, Dronenburg blasted her third home run in four games this season.

Southern Oregon got one back in the third, but in the bottom half of that inning the Cougars would push the lead to 4-1.  After another Bush base hit, Ciera Ashman put a great swing on a ball low and in, driving it well over the fence in right for her first home run of the season.

That would be all the Cougar pitching staff would need, as Sandberg, Chanel Rose, and Ashman all took their turn on the mound and did a good job limiting the opposing offense.

The Cougars are scheduled to play Vanguard tomorrow at noon, but keep an eye on www.csusmcougars.com for weather updates.
