Baseball Defeated by #17 Azusa Pacific 11-5

Box Score

Cougar baseball caught a break from the rain on Wednesday - but unfortunately couldn't catch any breaks from #17 Azusa Pacific, losing on the road 11-5.

CSUSM is now 4-2-1 on the season, while APU improves to 3-0.

While the final score appears lopsided, CSUSM was just one run back in the seventh inning before APU was able to pull away in the game's final innings.  In fact, San Marcos landed the first blow of the game.  In the first inning, one out singles by Ricardo Moran and Kevin Silvett set the table for Josh Miller, who crushed a three-run home run.  Miller has shown excellent power already in 2010, and leads the team with three home runs.

Azusa would chip away, however, scoring runs in the first and second innings, then putting up a four-spot in the third.  The big hit was a two-run homer by Anthony Delgado.

But CSUSM wouldn't quit, cutting the lead to 6-5 in the sixth inning.  Moran led off the frame with a double, and Silvett followed with his first home run in Cougar blue.

In the end Azusa would prove too much - CSUSM failed to score with two on and no outs in the seventh, and the home team plated three in the bottom of the inning to put the contest out of reach.  CSUSM's pitching staff was highlighted by Auggie Richardson, who struck out the side in an inning of work.

The Cougars will be in action on Friday and Saturday at Cal Baptist.
