Box Score 2 #21 Cougar softball's six game win streak was snapped on Saturday, as the squad ran into NCAA Division II opponent Cal State Dominguez-Hills. The Cougars lost game one 2-0 and game two 6-2.
CSUSM is now 10-9 on the season.
The Cougars couldn't go anything going offensively in game one, as CSUDH pitchers Regina Farfan and Kaci Carroll combined to throw a three-hit shutout. Cougar shortstop Alicia Vicencio went 2-for-2 with a stolen base, and Alyssa Dronenberg went 1-for-2 to account for the team's offense.
Pitcher Melissa Lerno was solid for all six innings, allowing just four hits and one earned run. CSUDH got both its runs in the fifth inning, when they strung together three straight singles and benefitted from a throwing error.
In game two, the Toros scored three runs in the first inning, and though the Cougars were able to fight back, they could never overcome the deficit. First baseman Amber Angel provided the big blow, a two-out two-run home run in the first.
CSUSM cut into the lead in the fourth, scoring a pair of runs. Ashley Estepa led off with a single, and after a couple fielder's choices and an error, an illegal pitch scored the first run. Elizabeth Bush then drove in the second run with a base hit, cutting the lead to 4-2.
But that would be as close as the Cougars would get, as CSUDH got both runs back in the bottom of the inning and went on to win 6-2.
CSUSM will look to get back in the win column tomorrow with a home double-header against Dominican University.
