Box Score Cougar baseball finished off a season sweep of Sioux Falls on Wednesday, winning a night game at Poway High 9-5.
CSUSM is now 16-8 on the season.
After Sioux Falls scored a run in the first, the San Marcos went to work in the second. Scott Clement led off the inning with a walk, and Josh Miller and Austin Coleman followed with sharply-hit singles to load the bases. Louie Russo got the first run home with a sac fly, Mike Pena knocked an RBI double to plate the second, and Johnny Omahen and James Scott both ripped singles to score the third and fourth. Ricardo Moran capped off the inning with a booming two-run double that made it 6-1.
Dane Ponciano added to the lead in the fourth with an RBI base hit, making it 7-1.
This was all in support of Cougar starting pitcher McClinton Heil. The righty entered the game with a team-leading 0.60 ERA, and he continued to throw well on Wednesday. Heil went five innings, allowing just one earned run on three hits. He walked two and struck out three en route to picking up the win, his third in as many starts.
After reliever Eric Julienne threw an easy 1-2-3 top of the sixth, James Scott led off the bottom of the inning with a bomb to deep center field, his team-leading 13th home run of the year.
Morgan Wynne worked a quick seventh, and Austin Coleman hit an absolute rocket that landed somewhere on the football field beyond the fence in left, making it 9-2. Sioux Falls closed the gap to 9-5 in the ninth, but that's as close as they'd get as reliever Steve Triolo finished off the game.
Cal State San Marcos will be back in action this weekend with a pair of home double-headers against Oregon Tech.
