Box Score In what has become the norm between these two teams, Cal State San Marcos and #3 Point Loma played a super-close baseball game on Tuesday. The Sea Lions got the best of this round, staving off a late charge by the Cougars to win 6-5.
CSUSM is now 13-6 on the season.
The difference in the game was a five-run fifth inning for Point Loma. Heading into the frame, the Cougars held a 2-1 lead thanks to an RBI double by Austin Coleman and solo homer by James Scott. But in that inning the Sea Lions got to Cougar starter Travis McCracken, who had been cruising along until that point, with the big blow coming on an Ian Macmaster bases-clearing double.
Those would be the last runs Point Loma would put on the board, however - thanks to scoreless work by relievers Matt Jenkins, Chris Skaalen, and Steve Triolo - and the Cougars would fight back. Coleman would cut the lead to 6-4 in the eighth thanks to a two-out, two-RBI single. In the ninth, Scott blasted his second homer of the game (and 12th of the season) to make it a 6-5 game. But the rally would fall just short.
CSUSM will host Concordia for a rare night game at Escondido High this Friday at 6:00 PM.
