Box Score Cougar baseball improved its record to 10-4 on Thursday, earning an easy 7-1 victory over La Sierra at Mission Bay High.
McClinton Heil, who threw five shutout innings against La Sierra in his first career start on February 22nd, got the call on Thursday – and the sophomore righty once again answered the bell. Heil went right after hitters, throwing his fastball for strikes and daring the opposing lineup to hit it. For they most part, they didn't. Heil went 6 full innings, allowing just 4 hits and 1 unearned run while striking out 3.
The Cougar offense provided Heil with plenty of support, though a stiff wind prevented the squad from putting up the gaudy offensive stats they did last time these two teams met.
Steve Harris was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI's and a run scored;
Johnny Omahen recorded two hits, an RBI, and a run scored;
Dane Ponciano tallied an RBI and drew two walks; and
James Scott ripped a two-out, two-run single in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
The Cougar bullpen finished things off, with
Matt Jenkins working an easy seventh, and flamethrower
Cheyne Gorski just overpowering the opposing lineup in the eighth and ninth. Gorski kept La Sierra hitless in his two innings, striking out three hitters to close out the contest.
Cougar baseball has Friday off, then will host back-to-back double-headers this weekend against Doane College.
