Box Score After a difficult loss for CSUSM Baseball yesterday, Cougar ace
Johnny Holtman took matters into his own hands on Tuesday, going the distance in a huge 9-1 win at Point Loma.
CSUSM is now 6-3 on the season.
The Cougar offense also came to play, giving Holtman a nice early cushion. CSUSM scored a pair of runs in the first on RBI singles by
Mike Pena and
Josh Miller. They added another run in the third on a
Dane Ponciano solo shot, making it 3-0.
After Point Loma got its first and only run in the fourth, the Cougars bounced right back with two more of their own in the fifth.
Austin Coleman delivered a two-out RBI single, and Miller scored on an error. CSUSM finished it off in the ninth, with
Scott Clement knocking an RBI base hit, and Coleman providing the big blow, a bases-loaded 3 RBI double.
But the story of the game was Holtman. The big righty was in control from start to finish, and while he wasn't striking out players at the same rate he normally does, Holtman was coldly effective. In his 9 innings of work, Holtman allowed 6 hits, 1 run, and 2 walks while striking out two. The Cougar defense also held strong behind him, not committing an error in the game.
Cougar baseball will be back in action this Friday and Saturday at Bethany.
