Jay Gomez was hired in the fall of 2017 to serve as a volunteer assistant coach for the Cal State San Marcos women’s basketball team.
Gomez arrived at CSUSM after several coaching stints at both the collegiate and high school levels. He began his coaching career as the girls’ varsity assistant basketball coach at Perris High School where he spent nine years with the Panthers. He helped guide the team to nine Sunbelt League Championships, two 1AA CIF Runner-Up finishes and two state semi-final appearances.
Gomez then became the girls’ varsity assistant basketball coach at Lakeside High School where he spent three seasons on the coaching staff. As a team, they won three Sunbelt League Championships and finished as the 3A CIF Runner-Up once. He assisted with the daily supervision and application of practice as well as direct and manage all phases of the girls’ basketball team. This would include in-season, off-season, summer, budgeting, inventory, tournament and public relations.
Gomez received his first head coaching position when he took the helm at Heritage High School from 2014-17. He also assisted with the West Coast Premiere Basketball Club as the girls’ AAU Travel Ball coach.
He received his associates degree in graphic design after graduating from Platt College in Ontario in 2003.
